Heater Core Tips ?

Before I tear into the Alpine, what are the do's and don't on removing and replacing the heater core on my Series IV Alpine?
What is brothering me is I looked through the Alpine Bible/manual aka blue book and even in the parts flyer's from BV and Sunbeam Specialist and they just show the simple layout of heater core and hoses/clamps. Blue book gets into adjusting it all but nota on R & R. I did have my replacement heater core pressure tested and its a good one!
I think I know where the heater core is on my car but not sure what to take off and remove to get it out, anyone have suggestions?

Hi Donna: The heater core is directly under the hood latch . If you look where that is there are screws that go completely aroun. You'll have to disconnect the hood latch from the rod & unscrew that pan (that's what I call it for lack of a better name) and remove it. The core sits right under there. So long as the heater core hasn't expanded, you should be able to remove the heater hoses and just pull it out. Just make sure you get the hood latch lined up when you put it all back together, otherwise you might have a hood that you can't get open. All in all, not complicated or really too hard to tackle! As a friend used to say, They're not rockets!
Cheers!

When he says expanded he means that the ends can sometimes balloon out a bit. Even if they haven't you may find a need to wiggle it around to get it out since there's not really room for your hands in there with it. And if you have the rod operated hood release you'll need to remove or withdraw the rod as well since it'll block the opening. But make sure you put the rod back before reinstalling the pan and latch, easier that way than trying to hit hole going through the firewall....

Just the INFO I needed!

Thank YOU Steve, for lack of not knowing better I was going in from under the dash to get er out. Since I did not rebuild the car only helped with purchasing and over seeing a lot of it, I was not present when the heater core was installed. Why I looked in the blue book and no where does it reference that, the section on the hood latch says nothing about it being part of the heater core assembly, I looked! I was fairly sure the heater core sets in the middle of the car behind or under the firewall, but how to get to it  Thanks for the information, why I love this forum and Club!

Need a 10 year old or a little person?

So need to recruit someone with small hands, hmm step daughter wears about a size 6 ring, mine or smaller then Jim's of course so looks like I will be going in for removal :p Thanks for the tip yes mine is the rod operated release, might try on a good piece of wire while working on all of this so if it gets bound up I can still unlatch it by my safety wire.

Donna,

You should also look to see the condition (and exitance) of the felt that is wrapped around the end tanks on the core. These should be thick enough to require some compression when you replace the hood latch "pan", so as to firmly hold the core in place. For replacement I used two layers of home weatherstripping felt. The other point is to be careful about the rubber drain pan and how it fits around the core. I am 99% sure it should not be pinched under the core, but sets close to it and is taped to the front wall of the chamber.

Donna- Don't worry about your hands being too big to reach and remove the HC. I have HUGE hands and I have no problem removing the core. Just have to make sure you've disconnected the hoses and moved that rod out of the way.

O My!

I find it easiest to wiggle it around and pull it out by the hose nipples.

But be sure to send her flowers in the morning.:D

I do believe we got off subject ;) That would be hose nipples not nipple rings Mike referred to, but yes I do understand to pull out the rod, then the heater core  Ever notice how plumbing and car mechanic terms are similar to other things that somehow get misinterpreted, hmmm.

Seriously Thank you everyone for all the suggestions, I will start the tear down this weekend!

The core doesn't drain either when the hoses do, don't forget once you have it out or you might be performing a one woman wet t shirt contest.....;)
