Girling 5" Brake Servo

Is the Girling 5" brake servo's proper for the early series (I & II) cars? ..are there rebuild kits for them ... and is it worth rebuilding a solid core or are there better alternatives? ...I know the early Tigers had them.

..... Thanks, David

I removed all of the Boosters on my Alpines. Replaced the brake cylinders with 11/16 dia mostly tandem units. Works very well for me.

Thanks Guys for the input! .... Just thinking about stock/original items and modifications using them. The brakes on my '62 worked darn good 'till I let her sit to long... now I'm going through the whole system.

......... David

Kits are available for the 5" servo for about $85.00. If the bores are in good shape it may be worth the effort to rebuild but it is a shot in the dark.
It is kind of tedious and you will need a couple of tools to remove and install a small c-clip deep in the bore. Itis easy to booger the bore during that process .I have just recently rebuilt a 5" ( not yet installed ) and have another one apart and ready for preping .
Another aspect of rebuilding is the vacuum canister. There is a leather seal around the plunger w/ a round 1/4 " closed cell foam behind it. If the leather seal is dried and crumbling it is not replaceable .
Dan's cure is a good one as is the aftermarket unit from Moss Motors for about $ 175.00.
I believe the rebuild kit is also available for the 7" unit. Check the Ebay Alpine site; that is where I found the 5 " kit.

does anyone happen to have a recent part number for a tandem master cylinder? I'm weighing the options of rebuilding the servo or switching out the master cylinder and going without the booster but I can't find a suitable MC replacement. The small piston in the servo assembly is kicking my butt trying to get it out

Factory Series Alpines without a brake booster had either a 0.700" or a 0.750" (3/4") brake master cylinder. A '78 Ford Courier master cylinder with 0.875" (7/8") bore will result in considerably higher brake pedal pressure.
