Gearbox swap

As the title says, is it possible to take another car's gearbox and swap it?

Im thinking about changing the original 4 speed + overdrive to a full 5 speed gearbox (provided that I will have to find a compatible gearbox)

Why are you changing the overdrive? Is there an issue with it?

The rootes OD setup is really good.. there are 2 kits for a swap of Toyota 5 speeds to the rootes motors...dellows and a NZ company .. otherwise you have to make your own adaptor and tailshaft

Im looking right now at the page, is it this one https://dellowconversions.com.au/ ?

The problem with my Rapier's overdrive is that currently its not working. Im exploring two solutions, either to fix it or swap the original gearbox to a 5 speeds one.

Im a novice in this matter, but, as I can inquire from your replay, I would have to do what? Craft an adaptator and a tailshaft? Do you have knowledge of a guide on how to change a gearbox?

It would be better to fix the overdrive.. what's the issue it has?

I dont really know right now, I only know that when I flick the OD lever, it doesnt do anything, so basically im stuck with the 4 speeds afore mentioned.

Yes. I know, with a voltimeter and the circuit, I can check for the problem, I am confident that it will most likely be the Od relay, a Lucas 6ra 33199 or something like that, ¿the problem? It isnt available anymore, and I have to check online for a solution.

So, in my inexperienced eye, I would rather swap the gearbox for one who doesnt require an overdrive

Firstly ... It can be the solenoid, the OD could be low on oil...it could be the switch ...it could be the relay

With the ignition turned on but engine off.. put the car into top gear and then pull the OD switch.. do you hear the solenoid click under the car?

I'm not sure why someone would want to have to modify sheet metal.. make a new tail shaft.. need Speedo drive.. get a special bellhousing and then install rather than trouble shotot what may be a very simple problem?

There is a replacement available for the self latching relay from the UK that's maybe £20 ....

But your car, time and money.. so so what suits you.

Well, it is mostly due to my lack of knowledge and the "where to start" and because of it being a rather unique classic car in Spain, meaning that there are, what, 2 of them? 3 at the most? Im left with a car no one really knows how to work with, with 0 of the needed tools to repair the OD (for example a lifter) or with the knowledge on how to de-attach the gearbox+OD in order to work with it.

Sure, I can do some trouble shooting to find the problem, which, again, I thin its most likely the relay due to it being rusty on the outside + I have already done what you said and there is no click coming the solenoid/OD housing...

If you where in my position, what would be the first step in this endeavour? Thanks for the help by the way :)

The relay cases are often oxidised...so don't worry about that.

As for someone to look at it... The overdrive unit is the same principle as all other ID units used until the 90s basically.. and the Laycock ones the Alpine used was used on Volvo's, MG, Bentley Jags triumph etc...so they aren't specific to a sunbeam

There is a workshop manual online .. there is a section on trouble shooting the overdrive ..I'd start by thos steps.

Also a few threads in the forum of people trouble shooting them... The rootes gearbox and overdrive is a very nice setup.. and a good part of the character of the car.

Yes, about the Od units, im not familiar with them, as I mentioned I have no expertise in car mechanics in general further than the basics, which, to be fair, have been improved since I own this unit haha.

In the regards of a manual, if you are refering the haynes one, I have even bought one, which I used to diagnose a fault in the blinkers' circuit.

I will still try your idea later on when i come back to home, I will see if there is any clicking coming from the solenoid
