Flooding in the Carolinas

I was just reading about the flooding in and around North Carolina. Is everyone there ok?
 
The coastal area was hit w/ massive amounts of rain, up to 18 " in some areas, so yeah they are having major issues.
 
It's interesting how these things work, the ebb and flow of storms do strange things.

Yesterday, every time I looked out, I saw only a continuous light drizzle and blustery, cool breeze. Did experience a short period of moderate rain last night.

This mornings newscast reported this county's rain total for yesterday at 0.54 inches and the highest wind gust of the region at 43 MPH.

The interesting aspect is the active radar clips yesterday showed a continuous heavy rain band running maybe 10-15 miles south of my position. Today, that band is running just a bit farther north of my position, and seems more active.

I'm thinking the rain was winding down about 9:00 am, at least the driveway was starting to dry.

Helene played havoc in Greenwood area last night and early this morning.

Trees are down all over and they took the power lines too.

We are without power and will be for estimated 10 days or longer.

Boats are scattered or sunk all around our area here on Lake Greenwood.

This will most likely be one of few posts I make for a while.

Charlotte is digging out of the rain and wind. Being a city of many trees has its liabilities. Many down, taking power lines with it. We got our power back at midnight, and it is amazing how "powerless" you feel without electricity and the internet. Spent yesterday trying to make sure the floating dock at our lake house did not float off its pilings. Ten feet of extra water in the lake makes you take notice. Hank in there Dan

WXII12 Piedmont Triad

Don't know if it hit the major national news, authorities declared the need for evacuations below the Lake Lure dam. It was being over topped and the worst was expected. I haven't seen or heard any follow-up on this so hopefully not more than minor issues. Just to refresh your memories, Lake Lure was where the movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed and where the club held Invasion 10.

There was one community listed, I think near Mt. Mitchel, that had received 29.5 inches of rain. Haven't seen a follow-up on that, either.

Wilkes County, maybe 30-35 minutes travel time from me, was listing almost 250 separate road closures yesterday - the most in the state. Wilkes Co. is one of the larger counties in NC and the foothills county before arriving at the northern Blue Ridge Mountains.

I caught that the Yadkin River was expected to crest tonight at a point just north of where US 64 crosses the river and about five miles north of the river's entrance to High Rock Lake.

Contacted Shannon Boal, who I think, is in the Big Bend area. They lucked out, no power for a couple of days, kept them busy keeping all the essential electrical devises up to snuff, using an emergency generator and swapping loads. But all in all, are very happy, considering the evil potential.

All my family /relatives live in Asheville and nearby small towns. Just today beginning to have some periodic contact w/ them as cell service and landlines are a bit fickle. Food water and staple medical related supplies are needed as stores are overwhelmed. Thankfully truck loads of same are being delivered, As I understand it I-40 from the east has one lane across Old Fort Mountain currently open only to aid related vehicles. I- 26 from the south { SC } is open. It is a huge area that is devastated and will be in need of help for the long term. I am sure anything you can do will be greatly appreciated. On a side note, I was caught up in the flood that hit Eastern Ky 3 years ago, in July, { Hazard, and other small communities }
They are still trying to recover from that storm which moved in and just set there 24 + hours and dumped, I think , about 15 plus inches of water.
If there is an urge to remember them, Hindman Settlement School,in Hindman , is a major organization in the area that has assisted MANY
families in the recovery process.
 
Dan R update
I called Dan yesterday. They got slammed in his part of our state. Many trees down which took out all of the power lines. He hopes to have power back by this Friday. He and his wife are doing well all things considered. And no falling trees hit his house. Anyone wanting to give him a call send me a PM and I will share his number.
We got lucky in central South Carolina-just high winds here. The core of the hurricane was about 100 miles west of us and that headed near Dan and then devastated western North Carolina. I have a couple of Sunbeams friends there that I have been trying to get in touch with but no word yet.
