Boot weatherstripping

Howdy Folks,
I'm having a problem with exhaust fumes coming into the cabin with the hardtop on the car, granted the cars nickname right now is "stinky" (it needs to be fine tuned) but what I'm finding is the soft top cover when tucked in(with hardtop on) will blow up out of it's tucked position from what seems to be air through the boot. The weatherstripping (from SS) is installed with the "flag" part facing away from the boot is that the correct way? Any other thoughts or ideas would be most welcome.
Thanks Tom j
I put exhaust tips on and they extend past the edge of the bumper, this car is a V6 conversion.

Yes that is way the seal is on my Tiger. Is the forward hinge screw a truss head screw? or is it a hex head?
Should be truss.
Any rust holes in the boot area? How about the upper shock covers in place and pliable?

Thank you for the replies, new fully welded exhaust, no holes in the firewall that aren't sealed , curtain installed, only a soft top frame.
Truss head in front position, but now comes a possible culprit, I put KYB shocks on and couldn't make the new shock covers fit. I'll seal those holes up and hope that it helps. Thanks for the idea, that item never crossed my mind.
Tom j

I still like the idea of a metal panel that completely seals off the trunk from the passenger compartment. All for safety sake incase of fire from the trunk.

Started making one for my Blue Boy (even though I don't have the fumes), just haven't been able to get it fabricated (I should say duplicated).

I have completed the panel for my Red GT V6 and it is very nice. The GT (no soft top) being totally different from the Blue Boy (Soft top).

Below are some PIC's of the Cardboard patterns I fab'd. Then I made some metal panels/pieces from them.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing the square rubber O rings mentioned above, since I don't recall ever seeing them when the car was completely disassembled or when rebuilding. Where would one obtain a set? Also looking for the rear top shock mount covers/grommet I put gaffers tape over the holes for the Invasion trip and it seemed to help. Sometime this week I'll try the painters tape around the boot lid to see if that's contributing to the fumes.
Thanks for any leads or help anyone may come up with. Tom j

Here are the metal panels/pieces for the ST style Alpines with the soft tops. The GT (without the soft top) is different

Any idea what size off the top of your head? Once I figure out where they go finding the size shouldn't be too hard.

I've got them on a car I'm working on. I'll try & take some pictures later today and post them.
They go around the stand offs (for lack of the proper name) . The bumper bolts go through the
stand offs and the O ring seals the hole where the bracket mounts to the body.

Here are some pics of what I have on this car. They shouldn't be all that hard to find.

For the bumper mounting bolts grommets that seal the bumper bolt spacers, you can use Sunbeam Specialties RG50 grommets.

Ah ha! Those were definitely not on my car when I took it apart. I'll look around for something similar. Thanks for the tip Mike I think there's a couple extra in the box of spares.

Thank ya'll for the information and help.

The stand offs are 7/8 " pipe. Just make sure you can get a 1/2" bolt through
the center.

I had measured the bumper bolt spacers on my series V and they were:

ID=0.53" x OD=0.877" x Length=0.623"

Are you sure it is exhaust fumes? Could it be leaking gas from the carbs on the manifold? Or some leak of oil or anti-freeze onto the exhaust? Or perhaps your new exhaust pipe tip is too short?

I am w/ Jay on this issue. Had the same problem w/ my v6. I think it is more likely a exhaust leak around the headers. I solved mine by replacing the header exhaust gaskets { a pia } w/ new graphite ones from Remflex { 50% crush }.but you dont need to go that far unless the manifold surface is
rough and pitted. As DanR has said , a bottom bolt is helpful for a perfect seal but is not absolutely essential .

Trunk odors getting inside the car can be nearly impossible. I was able to banish the exhaust odor, but not the gasoline odor. Even with all new rubber connectors and gaskets, went so far as to replace the rubber hose that runs from top to tank to top of tank with copper tube.

I must be the lucky one.... No fumes or odors with or without the hard top. Only rarely a whiff of exhaust with no top
