Aluminum Flywheel?

A casual look through the forum does not bring up any info on aluminum flywheels.

Does anyone know of a source for them?

If not, I'm thinking of having some made.

Anyone interested?

New plan?

I'm contemplating a different direction.

With an aluminum Flywheel, I still need to use the heavy Pressure plate.

So I'm thinking of a "Button" clutch, the bad news is that it would not lend it's self to street use, at least WELL...

But then I would also need to update the TO bearing as well....

... the jury is still out....

I got talked into one of the first button clutches back in the early 1970's when I was racing. Clutch shop that was helping me race wanted to try it out. It was a beautiful milling machine. Cut a clean 2 inch groove all the way around the flywheel. Those guys let me slap a stock pressure plate on with it. To this day I have no idea how to set one up but as you can see am scarred for life.
We stopped talking.

I got off my butt and contacted a source for Aluminum flywheels.

They didn't have a supply/source of ring gears, but said they could make the flywheel without the ring gear for around $350.

Sunbeam Specialties has ring gears in stock for $105 ? (old catalog).

Let me know if you are interested in one. DW

I called Fidanza and left a voice mail/message, first.

And then sent a follow up email (last week).

So far, NO response!

I'm Not inclined to deal with them, IF they get back to me.

I contacted a local place I have dealt with for Decades.

I assumed they were Just a dealer of Aluminum Flywheels, only to find they Make their own parts.

I asked them for a price to make 10.

I'm thinking I will buy 3 just for my consumption and I don't know what a minimum run is, yet.

I'm SOLD on less rotating mass and Trimming an Iron flywheel is a good step

but you just can't Get there, at least where I want to be with low mass.

Dan,

What's the target weight?
Assume its based on the 1600cc flyheeel to fit the larger larger early clutch?

I was planning to repo the SV flywheel in aluminum.

The reason for the SV is because the pressure plate is small and lighter than the earlier series.

I'm not concerned with clutch slipping because you can get discs with a Big variety of friction material.

Here are some pictures of Alcala's flywheel.

I have not weighed Alcala's flywheel, but we Did remove some more material when Steve got it, back, last century!

I JUST yesterday received pictures of Dave Anderson's Al flywheel, it looks like an early type.

If anyone has other pictures, please put them up.

Another thing I like about Alcala's FW over Dave's FW is the smooth design.

The ribs on Dave's adds windage, HOWEVER, they do add rigidity... decisions...

One thing I don't like about BOTH FWs, is the sharp corner in the step down where it bolts to the crank.

I WILL change THAT to a big radius!

I DO plan to post some type of drawing here of what I plan to have made.

The FW I am thinking about making will have a one piece replaceable friction surface.

I will talk to the manufacturer next week about design.

Let me know your comments/ suggestions.

BTW, I was thinking about trying to get the FW drawings from the Rootes Archives.

But I need the Rootes part numbers.

Does anyone have the FW parts numbers handy?

I dropped off a flywheel to be duplicated and described the changes I want to see.

The current plan is to have them Hard Black anodized.

Do to the limited interest I have had, I'm reducing the batch to 6 parts.
