Alternator exciter wire

I have a SV with a stock alternator that isn't charging the battery. Per the tests in the factory manual, the alternator is working (the headlights brighten with revs when certain wires are rearranged), ditto the regulator and relay, but still no charge getting to the battery.

I've read of an "exciter" wire that creates the charging field on an alternator. Which wire(s) would that be on a stock alternator setup?

Your description makes no sense to me. You say the lights get brighter, but "no charge getting to the battery". What do you base that statement on? Does your car have an ammeter?

The lights getting brighter tells you the Alt is putting out power.

Measure the voltage on the terminal posts of the battery.

Just reread your post and see the step "when certain wires are rearranged". How about explaining explaining page and paragraph you refer to.

But note that the warning light circuit and Warning Light Relay are likely areas if the Alt works when wires are rearranged, but does not put out normally.

Still don't understand your issue. Why do you say "battery not getting charge"? Do you mean not even with the "wires rearranged"?
