After installing the MSD 6AL control
box, I needed to get a Tach that works with
it. The S5 7000 RPM Tach I was using
needed a Tach adapter to work with the
MSD Box and 7000 RPM is a bit limiting
for my hoped future RPM range.
What to do?
I went shopping for an 8000+ Tach.
One challenge is the size.
The original Tach has a 3 7/8 hole (98mm),
not the most common size for a Tach.
I couldn't find a Tach in that size
for a price I wanted to pay.
So I started looking at other sizes.
I ended up with a 3 3/8 (85mm) size Tach.
I have the technology to make a Hole size
adapter.
One desirable feature of this new Tach is a built in
Hour meter!
And it is Very reasonably priced at less
than $30 delivered.
It has newer Stepper motor digital technology
and calibrateable to Nth degree!
What could go Wrong?...
After letting it age on the shelf for months,
I finally hauled out some scrap Aluminum
and made 3 adapter rings. After all, this
Tach is the latest Greatest thing, I'll
get more of them....
I installed the Tach, wired it up
and calibrated/set the pulse
count then fired it up...
Boy What a disappointment!
One thing I never thought of was
Response time!
This latest GREATEST Tach takes
SECONDS to respond to engine RPM
changes..... BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Damn it!
In retrospect, this Tach is for Boat use
not really intended for Auto use/Racing....
....Now I NEED to get a Boat to use this
Tach....
