2.8l Build Thread, may be different than what you're used to! But hopefully educational.

Watching this thread and the build, very interesting and thank you for the time it takes to post. It is appreciated.
 
Thanks for following along. Its an engine I want to see get a little bit of love. They are interesting to me and the performance world kind of past them by. We have the ability to do the R&D and laydown a good path to follow for those looking for a fresh perspective.
Hopefully in the next few months it will make some noise.
 
This may be completely wrong. I'm not an expert on this. How's that for a start?

I do know that on another marque car, when they added fuel injection, they changed the tops of the pistons, the cams (milder) and the intakes to take advantage of the efficiencies of the injection. But now when people want to get rid of that old school injection and put on carbs, they actually kill the horsepower. They tend to claim that the throttle response is better - but it's proven false. It must be the more quick sound from the carb throttles opening with the pedal rather than actual engine power.

Anyway, my point is that since you guys were talking about not getting expected HP from an engine, and I'm wondering if there were changes made to the head or other parts for fuel injection that are still causing issues.
 
These engines weren't fuel injected in American production, they stopped making them in 85'. Thats the beauty of the engine. Simplicity.
Complication i.e. fuel injection rarely makes more HP. It can make better cold starts, low speed tq, better efficiency at part throttle cruise, etc. Lack of HP is usually something missing in the fundamentals. Airflow, charge density ,intake tract momentum, compression, combustion efficiency, curtain area, things like that.
 
I fallowed the S Pruitt book ( I even have the chrome pan that is in the pic. on the front cover) went the whole 9 yards J&E Pistons Crower connecting rods polished crank lightened (don.t look for the 86TM crank it doesn,t exist typo in book I looked for 2 yrs ) ported heads 4 angle valve job (over kill machinist )even was going with the Frolick lifters ( bill Strope engine ) but chickened out instead i got lightened lifters from team Blitz Engle cam ep20 no longer available Made my own headers in 1980 ss Offenhauser intake and holley carb . Mallory dual point dissy and a Jacobs omni pak ignition and the engine was from a 86 aerostar van the thermostat holder came in handy it is on the top of the motor (heat rises )

No dyno yet no driving now not good in the snow I would send pics if I could figure how to add them I have owned the car since I was 17 . 73 now put v6 in it in 1980 now it is on the shelf 1974 vintage also heads done has the dual springs that crane cams made also Engle ep 20 cam only has small journals that were in that engine also have another 76 v6 that is warmed over alot but never run always wanted to but 1 in a Hillman Husky

Sounds good Dan. The EP-20 looks like a good cam. Its always good to hear from you guys that have a lot of experience with these engines.
