2.8 w/EPS Help

Hello there,
Purchased a nice Gen V with 2.8 build. The car came w/an EPS installed, but disconnected. The previous owner stated that he disconnected it because it didn't play well with the play in the Alpine steering box.
I'm interested in giving it another try. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

Here is an entry from a thread about Alpine steering and EPS. The entire thread is informative, also.

Much to our regret, DanR - the EPS expert - passed in May. Hopefully, someone with experience will chime in with more help than I can offer.

Yes, in my research, I've read a lot of DanRs posts. I never knew him, but I'm very impressed. He would've been my first email.

I'm three years out from a bone marrow transplant and SO thankful for City of Hope and their cancer research. I only wish pancreatic cancer was as treatable.

I have an EPS in my SI V6 conversion. There have been a few reports of the steering box cracking with EPS installations. In my view, that has been primarily from turning the applied force adjustment potentiometer of the EPS to the max and also turning the wheels back and forth while the car isn't moving. In many of the modified cars (including mine) the stock wheels/tires have been replaced with bigger wheels and low profile tires which require more effort to turn with the car stopped.

I don't recall the exact source but there are some discussions out there from owners in England describing the maximum torque that the Alpine steering box can take...maybe in the 15-20 ft/lb range if I remember correctly...at the maximum torque setting (which I believe is greater than 50 ft/lb) the EPS motor can draw up to 60 amps...In a kind of shade tree mechanic logic I've added a 20 amp breaker to the electrical feed so that the EPS can't produce max torque and I set the adjustment pot so that the power steering just engages at it's minimum level which is just enough to reduce the steering effort that comes from the bigger wheels/tires....and I try to avoid turning the wheel unless the car is moving.

So far so good...don't quote me on the torque numbers...they may not be exact but they are in the ball park.

I also greatly miss DanR...I couldn't have built my car without him.
