I have an Alpine that was in storage for many years and was wondering should I replace the freeze plugs before reinstalling the engine ?

If the engine is out, I'd recommend you pop out all the freeze plugs and clean out any gunk. Don't forget the freeze plug on the rear of the engine. Maybe Tim R has created a video on this topic on his Sunbeam Alpine channel? Maybe I am remembering the video that husky drvr linked to.
