Cam question

In the process of rehabbing my new-to-me 1960 Series 1 last winter, I found that the block was out of a RapierII.
I have the alloy head and appropriate carbs on it, but was wondering if the cam specs are different between the Rapier and the Alpine?

Those cams will show wear even at 30k miles. I don't have an answer your question, but if you rebuild it, get the cam re-gound by Delta in the "KB" profile.

clhiller,

If your engine is assembled and operating with the alloy head, you don't have the Rapier cam. The Rapier II originally used an iron head. The valve arrangement differs between the two heads which causes incompatible valve motions on the center two cylinders. The question is which alloy head and cam you have installed. The three main engine cam specs can be found in WSM 124, General data section.

cam differences

Maybe this pic will help.

cyl#2 lobes circled in black

exhaust is red

intake is blue

fuel pump lobe is green

drive gears are circled in purple - the narrow drive gear is for a 1725 alloy head. the wider gears are for three main engines

these are two alloy head and two iron head cams - one of the alloy head cams is for a five main engine

Hope this helps,

It is together and running fine. The reason I ask is that the distributor that’s on it is from the Rapier and I was thinking about getting it rebuilt and recurved by Jeff at Advanced Distributors. I wanted to get the correct curve for the Alpine cam.

OK, WSM 124, General Data section, page 17, at bottom of page - first set of numbers is S I, II, & III

....................................................................................................... - second set is S IV

Vacuum advance is same for all.

(full retard) is referring to the vernier scale adjustment I think.

HTH,
