Starter removal

1968 Series V 1725 motor. Do the exhaust down pipes need to be removed to get the starter out?

No. But it often helps to unbolt the clutch slave from the bellhousing. And it requires some maneuvering of the starter and turning the front wheels to one side. See this thread. or do your own search on Starter ,Removal.

If I recall it was turn the wheels to the right max

Good luck. On the Series 2, we had to remove the downpipes and loosen and raise the carburettors. We tried every other possible combination, but this ended up being the only way to do it.

The starter could be removed from my Series II without removing/loosening anything. However, once the starter was unbolted, it had to be dropped to the floor. It could not be taken out by hand.

I took starter from my SV from underneath. Not fun but didn’t disconnect anything.
