I had a serious failure in my SII OD a couple of months ago. I'm going tomorrow to pick up another trans/OD unit. Thinking that before I install anything, I should do what I can to fix it while it's out.
My old trans is in my garage floor. It's from an early series (non-synchro 1st) and probably need synchros into 2nd, at least. While it is sitting on the garage floor (OD removed), I tried side play on the front and rear shafts. Front is close to 1/4 inch and rear is a bit less. Is this normal, WSM really doesn't say?
New one is from a SIII.
I haven't dismantled/inspected a Sunbeam transmission, ever. The last one(s) I did was/were > 40 years ago and early 50s Chevys. I have all the normal tools including a 10 ton press. Will these tools be enough?
I'm guessing I want new synchros reguardless of which trans I use. Does the lateral play in the front/rear shafts suggest new bearings there? Any other 'just replace' parts in the trans? Any other things the WSM doesn't mention?
Thanks
Al
