Back in August, during a discussion about the movie The Great Escape, I posed this question:
"very few people know the one actor in the movie who actually played his real-life part as a POW in WWII. Guess who," and was surprised that nobody came up with the answer.
The actor was probably the last one you'd think of - the mild-mannered bookish type who plays "the forger," Flt. Lt. Colin Blythe - Donald Pleasence. He served as aircrew in 166 Squadron, RAF, until Aug. 31, 1944, when his Lancaster was shot down. Pleasence spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft I.
