Weak Spark

Hi Guys,

I am getting to the point of trying to start the SIV for it's first ime in at least 5 years. I have changed all the ignition tune up parts (points, cap, rotor, plugs, condensor, wires)., along with a new coil. Looking at the spark at the plug it seems weak and almost intermitent. The spark at the points is regular at all four positions.

Any suggestions what to test, check or change?

Appreciate your sharing of the knowledge.

Remove the coil high tension wire from the distributor cap, hold it about 1/4" from a ground and check the spark. If it is good, you have a high tension spark leak in the distributor. Often caused by a bad rotor. If the coil spark is weak, check the resistor. It is mounted near the coil. They often corrode, causing weak spark. As a quick check, bypass the resister. If the resister is bad, replace it. Do not drive the car any length of time without the resistor, it will kill the coil.

This is not a definitive list of things that can be the problem, but two of the most common and diagnostic tests that get you started on chasing down the problem.
