I need to put new shoes on my V6 daily driver. It presently has 175/70/13 tires. I have a set of 14" rims and will put new 14" tires on it.

Question - will 185/70/14 tires cause rubbing on the front valence? Thanks

Thanks for the response John. I appreciate it. The front valence is that metal panel that is beneath the bumper/radiator and curves back into the wheel well.

Paul, for kickers, I have P195 55 15's on my SV. Only trimming or bending I had to do was about 3" length tapered from about 1/2" for nothing along the valance where the tire barely touched at the sharpest turn radius.

You can compare the tire diameter/height/radius at a Calculator I posted a couple years ago.

I'll try to get if for you.

Hey Dan,,, I also have 15 inch rims. But no tires yet. Can you show a pic of the tire on the car? And is the car lowered at all? thanks

PICs of the clearance in my SV...

Here are a couple PIC's of the clearance on my '67 SV V6 with the P195 55 15's

The 1st is Front wheel
2nd is just behind the rear wheel
3rd is in front of the rear wheel

I'm trying to up-load some of my wheels showing the width of the tires and clearance under the car.

My car is "not lowered"

Stay tuned.

The tire size will not match the 175/70/13. Actually the, radius is 1.27 percent smaller. A 65 series is 1.47 larger
Tacomaworld.com has a great tire size chart that you can enter tire sizes and get the figurs including spedometer differences as well as rotations per mile

The first step in selecting a tire size is determining the section width and that requires knowing the wheel width which has not been mentioned.

Barry, I believe I attempted to make reference with this comment: "I'm trying to up-load some of my wheels showing the width of the tires and clearance under the car."

Dan,

I was not referring to width of tires and clearance under the car; I was referring to the correct tire section width for the width of the wheel.

A bit of info for anyone that may want a new set of 13" tires for their Alpine. Sears now stocks 175/70 R13 tires. They carry the sears PATRIOT brand. They carry a 30K warranty. I bought a set yesterday to stash away for future use. $107.00 for four including tax.

Posted as information.

Factory Alpine steel wheels were 13" x 4.0" for S-1 through S-IV and 13" x 4.5" for the S-V.

Alpines came with 5.60 / 5.90 / 6.00 - 13" tires. The radial equivalent of a 6.00-13 is 155/80-13.

The tire manufacturers list an acceptable wheel width of 4.5-6.0" for 175 mm section width tires.

According to the tire makers, 175/70-13 tires would be marginal on S-V factory wheels and too wide for S-I through S-IV factory wheels.

Just the facts, YMMV.

I remember when my dad had the series 4 original tires replaced at the local Goodyear store. They installed 5.90 bias ply tires and when I saw it I said NO! They then replaced them with 6.50 tires. Looked much better. It now has 175/70 R13, the red Harrington has 175/80, the other two Harringtons are setting on 175/70, the 69GT has 175/70 Dunlops and the series 5 rides on 185/70. It has five correct date coded wheels and have never had a problem. The 69 has the original factory mounted radial spare tire still hanging under the trunk floor. It's a 165 and probably still has the NOS air in it.

I'm running 185/60 13's on my 62's stock wheels with no issues and I've been told by a number of SV owners that they have been running 205/60 13's on stock wheels for years with no issues as well.

Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it. I have decided to use
185/70/14 tires. There should be no rubbing issues and they will "fill the hole" a bit better. Regards from sunny, warm South Dakota, Pete
