Remote oil filter gaskets

Between the engine and the remote oil filter on the engine, is there a gasket, and is there a gasket or o-ring on the bolt that goes through the filter base adapter? I hope this makes sense.

Hi,

At present, I have a fibre type washer sealing the bolt to oil filter which is not ideal as you really have to tighten it up well. A few years back my Dad bought some seals from one of the UK Sunbeam specialists which were metal with a rubber sealing ring on the inside. Next oil change I will install one and see how it performs. I will post a picture of the seal.

Regards, Robin.

Hi,

To follow on from my previous post, I found the UK supplier where I purchased the seals. Sunbeam SparesCompany - part number TE 51. It looks like they cost 2 pounds for four seals.

Regards, Robin.

Thanks for the replies guys, The through bolt seems to have been turned for an o ring, since it is out on the bench I'm going to do some test fitting and will report back.

Hi,

Going by the workshop manual, they only used a fibre washer to seal the bolt to the adaptor. If you can find and O-ring to suit the bolt, please let us all know. It will also need to be a fairlt tight fit to ensure the seal does not leak.

Regards, Robin.

Mine leaks out slightly at the top of the remote filter adapter, and the nut is as tight as I can get it. I have not investigated to see what type of seal is there yet.

Hi Chris,

I'm not sure if you are near Sunbeam Spares Company, but they seem to have very good service from reports I have heard. I have not tried their seal yet, but they look like they would be better than the standard fibre washer. I am hoping that with the new seal, I don't have to tighten it as much as the fibre washer. The two mating faces between the bolt and the adaptor may not be parallel either.

Regards, Robin.

I want to thank all for the replies, I took the "easy" way out and bought the ford motorsport oil filter adapter ford part m6880a50 from jegs for $75+ shipping. ClassicTiger.com has a pic. tell you in a couple weeks if it works. Stan

Hi Stan,
I only looked briefly at my car but I wondered would you be using a "shorty" oil filter? I can't see how a normal sized oil filter will clear the steering...or the crossmember...depending upon the angle.

Hi Paul,

I think with the Ford motorsport filter adaptor, you have to use a smaller filter. By memory, I think that it is due to the crossmember. I have seen pictures of people using a very shallow filter (approx. 1 to 2" deep) with no adaptor as well.

Hi Robin, just to clarify, I was talking about the part that screws into the oil filter. I think you might be talking about the part that screws into the block?

Hi Chris,

I did mean the adaptor that attaches to the filter as well. I believe that the seal is the same for the filter and block. The last few time I have replaced the filter on the Tiger, I have had trouble getting to seal correctly. Next oil change I am trying the one in the picture I previously posted or a thicker fibre washer.

Regards, Robin. :)

Hi guys, I do plan on using a shorty filter, and the reason I bought it from jegs is that if it doesn't work out I can return it. I am also running Sanderson tube headers which might further muck up the fit. Will know for sure by next weekend.

Alrighty now, Jegs racing delivered the parts, quicker than expected, a nice surprise. The filter base fit, needed a little persuasion on the headers, fitment leaves a 45 degree window for swinging the filter,(the whole assembly rotates). However this filter base is set up to screw into the filter mounting standard male thread. The tiger had a female motor side and the filter base has a female mounting side. Having seen other small block fords and realizing they all had the male nipple protruding from the filter port, I headed for pick-a part. All the fords I came across had the same adaptor, easiest was the econoline van with a 6 cyl. It took me three times to get one unit out without screwing the male threads, if I were going to do this again I would bring an ez out for 1/2-5/8". Bottom line so far so good, motor is still on the stand.

Hi Stan,
Can you post a picture or two? Or email me a couple?

Looking at my car, it looks like the filter needs to be pointing up (at some angle) to clear the crossmember.

I am getting so close to getting my car on the road after 4 years and it appears the oil filter placement is my main stumbling block.

If we are talking about the threaded part the filter screws on to I believe it is common pipe thread.
If we are talking about the econoline adaptor it has a bolt with an O ring type of fastener to attach to the block leaving the filter at right angles to the block. This allows some manouvering space for the filter.I still have one on the shelf. You can also buy it from Ford racing

Paul, a picture of the filter is at classictigerdotcom. I have the motor on a stand and the crossmember is out of the car. Thanks for the heads up I will move the 90 degree adaptor to a foward and up position. This is a lot easier to do out of the car because there is a support angle on the housing so to change orientation it has to be removed and turned past the support and reinserted. If you look at the pic you will see what I mean. Will try to post some pics this weekend.

Chuch, the piece the filter mounts to is common pipe thread, but the size for the filter side is 5/8 and the side that screws into the block is 3/4. My sizes are only an estimate but the two ends are different sizes.

Ok, put the engine in, mounted the crossmember and with Sandersen headers the 90 degree filter from an econoline or ford racing will not work. The headers are long tube style, similar to the ones CAT puts out, this may work with the stock manifolds but the filter has to be pointed to the rear if it were to work. Thanks for all the help, but this myth has been busted. Time for a new approach.
