Overdrive conversion - rebuilt

Hi all,

I have for sale a full synchro series 5 overdrive gearbox conversion - probably the best factory option. It will fit all series Alpines 1-5
the gearbox and overdrive are fully rebuilt and guaranteed for 6 months by John Roseby the UK expert.

Conversion incudes:
rebuilt gearbox and overdrive - new clutches etc
speedometer - used (I have series 4 and series 5 style)
OD column switch - good used
OD relay - good used
New wiring loom
All wired up and tested

You would need a speedo cable LHD Overdrive from Rick at SS and also to have your drive shaft shortened slightly (works out cheaper than me sending you one). I can supply a correctone if you want to keep your original.

Shipping to the US lower 48 is around $200

PM me for further details and to confirm it fits your car

thanks for your interest

I have purchased two of these from Jeff in the past. They are worth every cent or pound in his case. Regards Ed

If you're reading this and even thinking about an overdrive, think no longer, this is the one you want. Made for the Alpine, bolt up and drive. I've had one for a few years now and works perfect. Nothing like that extra gear for on a long drive.

I bought 3 of Jeff's Transmission/Overdrive units, had one in the Series II, one in the 3GT now for about 5 or 6 years with no problems yet, I just put the 3rd one in the Series IV about a year ago and it's doing great. These units of Jeff's are top notch, you will be pleased with your purchase. When I get to the point of needing one for the 69 Fastback I will contact Jeff for m 4th one. Thanks Jeff for the great product.

Seven years and 22,000 flawless miles ago I installed one of Jeff's SV ODs and, hands down, it is the absolute best addition to my Red Roadster. Many thanks for all the fun miles of cruising, Jeff!!

bob,
the 69GT's use the J type unit instead of the one used in the series alpines. there are also differences in the transmission,so make sure you get the right unit . the transmission out of a series 5 will not work in the fastbacks.

Hi 65beam,

thanks for raising the point, you are partly correct.
The fastbacks used a longer overall gearbox with a different input shaft and adapter collar. the manshaft is also longer.
This was mated to either a D type or a J type overdrive with a fine spline output. Both of which are factory fit in the fastback.

Overdrive update

I have had a lot of interest and its great to see that the previous ones I sent over are still working well. (thanks for the kind words all).
I have now sold the overdrive but I have one more available.
It is exactly the same - series 5 full synchro - and is currently with John for rebuild.
I have the same set of conversion parts to go with it - switch, relay, wiring and speedometer.
Its the last one I have for now.

Keep on Sunbeaming !

Everything you need, nothing you don't, and the shipping is still low. I wonder how many will go looking for an overdrive before this is available again. Nothing like the present.

I'm the fellow who bought this unit from Jeff and I couldn't agree more. After reading all the positive remarks on this thread about his previous units and seeing that I have been looking for just this combo for my Series II Alpine I took the plunge.
Mary Lou and I seem to do quite a bit of highway driving (2600 miles to SUNI and back this year) so it seemed like a no brainer.
Thanks again to Jeff and everyone who commented.

Speedometer off with overdrive installed.

I have a 1963 Series 3 Alpine I put a overdrive transmission in and the speedometer is off. If I'm doing 45 the speedometer shows 60. Does anyone know what I need to do to correct this problem?

Tom,
I'm assuming you have the correct 3.89 in your car. You need to either source a S3 speedo from a factory OD equipped car, get a conversion box (others on the Forum probably have info on this) or have your existing speedo recalibrated by Nissenger or another quality rebuilder (not MoMa, they've botched that last two speedos I sent them).

The SAOC Alpine Guide has a great article on speedo recalibration. If you PM me your e-mail address, I can forward it to you.

Overdrive speedo

Tom I took mine down to a regular speedometer shop, they ran it on a wheel drum and made a small hook on device and made new cables for it. 100.00
Plain and simple, have a pro do it and relax.

Yo,
Anyone in the US rebuilding these OD's with trannys?

Jeff, what does it cost for me to send it to your guy to rebuild? I justed picked up a complete OD with tranny I would like to rebuild for my other Series III. Laylock rebuilders on web?

There is a guy in Columbia, South Carolina that has rebuilt two for my
Series 3's. He knows them very well and I would recommend him. I have even asked if he would do this for others in the Sunbeam world and he said he would. Send me a PM if you are interested. He is a Jaguar specialist and soon becoming a Sunbeam specialist.

Cheers,
