Lockheed overdrive

It appears the early volvo b-18/b-20 overdrive unit is the same or very similar to the Alpine overdrive. Has anyone ever used this unit to fit to an Alpine via adaptor plate or otherwise? Just wondering since those unit seem to be available..

Laycock, not lockheed.

Yes, the earlier volvo overdrive is a "D" type and yes, it can be fitted, without an adapter, it just bolts right on.

MGB, MGC triumphs and some other cars of the era also used the "D" type laycock OD too, none of them however used the splined output shaft, and this is the key difference between the rootes version of the "D" type and all others.

Also, you need to pay attention to the oil pump detail as some models (mostly triumph from what Ive seen) use a con-rod type pump detail instead of the eccentric cam detail as used on rootes type ODs.

There are some people that have used the other "D" types in alpines, this involves taking a telescopic drive shaft from the other car, and welding it onto a rootes driveshaft. This way you flange bolts on both sides, and the driveshaft can change lengths due to suspension travel.

I think you actually mean Laycock, not Locheed.

The OD unit fitted to the Alpine is a Laycock-De-Normanville D-type. I'm not sure what unit is fitted to the Volvo, but just because they appear to be the same dosen't mean they are.

The biggest problem with this theory is that the OD unit can NOT be installed on a standard 4-speed gearbox without the proper OD style main shaft. The output portion of this shaft is different in length than the non-OD type and has a cam assembly that actuates the OD pump. You can't just pick up one of these OD units from a Volvo and slip it on your Alpine gearbox. Won't work... unless you already have an OD gearbox.

' Laycock " Overdrive

You are correct about the name. Too many cool ones.. I have a Volvo trans w/ the OD on it and just had to ask the question. If it can be done someone will do
it. May be easier to adapt an Alpine bellhousing to the volvo trans?
