    There were a few old stations similar to these in this area up until 1998. With the federal regulations that went into effect that year I was not able to sell them gas unless they did all the upgrades to tanks and pumping equipment at an average cost of 100K at that time. A couple of the buildings are still in use by owners that use them as car caves for storing and working on their cars.

    It's in Winston-Salem, NC. probably about a mile off US 52. IIRC, the local Shell Oil franchise built eight of these stations. This is the only one left and it has not served as a station since at least the Seventies. I think it is currently maintained and used as a headquarters for a historical group.
