Higher would be better, and make sure you have something else under the car incase the jack stands
fail. I've done it from under the car with the engine in, but I raise the front of the car higher than the rear.
That way the trans won't drop too far when you pull it out. It also makes it easier when you put it back together
too as you have the trans not needing to be lifted up too high.

I raised my series V 13.5 inches using wooden blocks under the wheels and used a low profile transmission jack. It was sufficient clearance for the process for how I removed the gearbox. See page 9 at http://mhartman.net/files/sunbeam/OD gearbox installation.pdf
