Gasket Cement

Probably of questionable significance but nevertheless: A cheapo Dollar General fingernail file or in my case, a used tenor saxophone reed, works great to spread a thin even coat of sealant on a gasket. Allows you to spread the material up to the edge of the gasket without excessive amounts later oozing out on your freshly painted and detailed engine.

I make putty and adhesive knives out of old hacksaw blades. Grind off the teeth, make a tapered end, round the tip and then use a piece of hose (that is heat-shrinkable) to make a handle. They're the best application knives because they're so flexible.
