Funky brake noise

Before everyone jumps on me, yes, it involves the brakes, so yes, I will have my regular mechanic/brake specialist do the work and sign off that everything is working properly and safely. However, I'm still curious before I take it in as to what the issue could be. I have nice firm brake, lots of braking power, no pull in any direction on braking etc. However when I pump lightly on the brake pedal when rolling, forward direction only, there is a tap/clunk/knock (on the front driver side wheel) in sinc with the downward pedal pump. I did a quick inspection of the underside and didn't find anything obviously loose or out of place. I don't see any evidence of fluid leak, and again have firm brake pedal.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

John.

John,

When I had my '59 Bug I rebuilt its brake system completely and the first thing I noticed was a similar clunking sound when I tapped on the brake pedal. I finally pulled the wheels off and noticed that the brake pad/adjusting mechanism wasn't centered on one of the wheels and was just reacting to a little bit of play that shouldn't have been there. It was an easy fix but irritating until I found it.

Yours may be totally unrelated but I thought I'd pass it along just in case.

Bill

May be obvious, but could it be WWK (Wire Wheel Klunk)?

Rich

Boy, I hope not. Brand new Dayton wires!

By the way, it doesn't make the sound when the car is sitting, just when it is rolling, either in gear or coasting.

With brand new wires, did you use the original hubs or replace them with new/unworn ones?? New wires on worn out hubs still can start making noise because the splines on the wheel and hub won't mesh properly due to differences in the wear patterns.

forgot that part, yes brand new hubs from British Wire Wheels, who we highly recommend by the way.
