Good info, guys, thanks.

I wonder, is there a 'compatibility list' somewhere of Alpine parts, where information like this would be found (or added)?

Yeah, there is. I've collected a bunch of information from various postings over the last few years, but the puzzle is how to present it on the website. Right now I have a list of direct links to various discussions, (pros & cons, so you can make a fully-informed decision) but I fear all will be lost the next time the posts are 'trimmed'.
I also have a few other substitution docs people have sent me, but many are in the vein of: Here's a Rootes part from another car that also fits Alpines. I think most US folks are after: Here's a GM/Ford/etc. part that will work in an Alpine -- stuff like shocks, brake pads, the elusive perfect brake caliper, etc.

I believe there are some lists on other sites, but you're right, we should have one here.
I'm planning on discussing this with folks at the Invasion... among other topics.

Unwieldy, at best...

PS -- already I see the speedometer link is a dead end.

Tried doing a list once and it was a nightmare at least for me could not get it in a good order to make it user friendly and the whole checking part numbers and whether or not the crossed part was still availble toss in reports of things not working and it was just too much for me... then the hard drive crashed and I had no back up.

One example is calipers, the capri caliper is supose to work and some folks on here have used them. I ordered a set from Rock Auto and got two different calipers, different manufacturers. They both were the same bore and both bolted on but the one was a slightly different shaped casting and would not clear the rim. This was on a wire wheel car. Now I am sure on a capri they would have worked or maybe a steel wheel Alpine.

The other thing that has to taken into account is Alpine series change. Like the brake pads we talked about here they work for S3 and up but not Si and SII so you have to note the series the inter change part will work on.

Perhaps a separate forum section, with stickies for each major parts category, and sort of a template of info that each post has to have -- like series numbers/years, engine sizes, etc. so that each listing is unambiguous... and then allow all to contribute. Like a wiki, sort of. It does quickly become a lot of work for one person.

That's an excellent idea, Ken. I agree, as Jim noted, one person doing this is going to be an impossible burden. As the Amish say, "many hands make light work".

Possible template fields:

And the categories (topic headers?) should probably be in alignment with the "Rootes Light Cars" manuals (Cooling, Engine, Fuel System, Clutch & Propeller Shaft, Gearbox & Overdrive, Front Suspension, Rear Axle, Rear Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres, Electrical System, Body, Lubricants, Heater, Special Tools).
