finding a spare wheel...

This is really a question for the other aussies....

I need a spare wheel rim, 13", standard bolt pattern.
Are there any (relatively common) steel rims around that might suit? eg holden, ford etc? Its tricky finding stuff up here in Darwin.

Offset/width isn't absolutely critical, as its only for a spare. The one I have has way too much offset and sticks out considerably. (I was told it was off a Cortina but I'm not so sure). It might get me through registration, but I wouldn't want to drive on it.

Hi Dave,

I am not 100% sure, but I think your correct, the early Cortina/Escorts are similar by memory. As you said, they would'nt check that sort of thing that closely (as long as it can fit in the correct spot in the boot).

Regards, Robin.

Dave as you have an early series alpine you have to take care that it will still fit int he narrow space for the spare in the boot. I would recomend getting a wheel from a hillman and using that, easy to find down in victoria, maybe NSW, could ship it realtively cheaply and you know it will fit the studs and the wheel well. If you want help drop me a mail.

oh.. i am finally back in melbourne.. been in dubai, shanghai and HK for last 2 months, so am back online again now.

Hi Michael,

My car is missing the metal cover for the spare wheel anyway, so width isn't such a problem for storage, as I'll probably end up fabricating something to suit, but you've given me a good idea....

I'm now officially "chief mechanic" on a friends 66 Hillman Gazelle (minx derivative), which we will be restoring over the next year or 2 (to commence as soon as I register the Alpine, not long now). I'll try the spare off that....;)

Sounds like a good 2 month escape from the Melbourne weather! I'm not familiar with Shanghai and HK, but I've spent lots of time in Dubai. I lived in Oman and UAE for 7 years 91-98. I'm not sure if I'd recognise Dubai these days though!
cheers

The Gazelle wheel should fit fine, as will those from Series VI Minx, Hillman Super Minxes, Hillman Hunters and Humber Vogues. Earlier Minxes in Australia (up to Series V) used 15 inch diameter wheels so they're no good (although the bolt pattern is the same).

While Cortinas, Capris and Escorts from the 60s/early 70s use the same (4 x 4.5 inch) bolt pattern, the offset may be different - I have tried 5.5 inch wide Escort/Cortina Mags on my car - the tyre fouled the upper control arm on the front (they fitted OK at the back).

Some European cars use an almost identical 4 x 108 mm bolt pattern, including Alfa 105 GTV, some Audi, early Porsche 924, some Peugeot - but the trick is finding one in 13 inches. I have a set of 14 x 5.5 Alfa alloys that will fit fine (even down to the offset) if I can get the correct diameter shank wheel nuts.

Cheers, Vic

Correction - In my last message the wheel bolt pattern should have read 4 x 4.25 inches, not 4.5.

And Dave, I think I have a spare 13 inch Hillman wheel that you can have for minimal cost if you need it, I'll check tomorrow and let you know,

Cheers, Vic
