Were "all" the early series hardtops aluminum? or did they make a steel version at some point or aftermarket. My impression is NO .... but someone else insists they have a "steel" top for an early car.

All SI/II factory tops were aluminium. There were some aftermarket ones in fibreglass.

The s3-V factory tops were steel ( except about y aluminium ones for some factory racers)

There were several aftermarket fibreglass versions.
