Most people don't realize that, except on race day, the course is just a series of public roads. Amazing! Speeds up to 180 mph while dodging cars, vans and wandering bicyclists and pedestrians. Imagine doing this today!

Ironic that Hawthorne, world champion who had seen so many of his contemporaries die on the track, should be killed in a dumb crash on a public road, apparently overcooking it on a corner like any teenage hotrodder.
