Have been stripping the rear axle down to fit new seals etc. Managed to get the prop shaft drive coupling out to replace that oil seal and the bevel pinion seems to move about side to side alot. Is it poss that when removing the coupling the bearing has been pulled out of position?

They are tapered roller bearings and when the flange is removed to get the seal, there is nothing holding the races together. Is that what you are asking? Its not very clear?

that would explain the movement, does that mean the roller bearings are now loose in the diff or are they self contained in one of the races

The rollers are captive in their gages; They won't fall out (they shouldn't fall out). The pinion shaft is loose, right? The bearing near the seal is also loose, and there are critical shims behind it. DON'T let it come apart and let the shims fly everywhere.... Then you are toast!

Most taper roller bearing have to be pre-loaded to function properly. The usual way is by adding or removing paper gaskets until the correct preload is reached. It's similar to front wheel baring that have to be pre-loaded by turning the castellated nut until the bearing just begins to bind, then backing off one castellation before inserting the split pin.

In the case of the diff carrier, the preload is done with metal shims between the carrier/pinion shaft and the bearings, and the preload is measured with a fish scale and rope wrapped around the pinion shaft.
