Guess its been discussed b4, I have standard set of wire rims, I think thats 41/2 inches? Whats the agreed profile that won't scub when connering. I am running 175.70/13 at the moment. Oh and I will need an international brand as I am in Australia.

Steven,

Do you want a tyre that is as close to the original rolling radius as possible or you want a tyre with original dimensions width/height?

the tyres run a width to height ratio.. the second number is height which is a percentage of width, so if you fit a wider tyre and the width percentage stays the same you increase the rolling radius of the tyre, you get a taller top gear in effect and the speedo goes out. And then inverse if you got for a narrower tyre with the same height ratio.

As for scrubbing, I assume you mean against the front guard on lock, what series alpine do you have, and do you know if the valence has been trimmed or the lips rolled?

You can fit 185 series tyres on the alpine wires, but the height ratio will determine how close they come to contact, the taller the closer it will be. Also 13" tyres especially sporting type are getting hard to get.. i would speak to someone like stuckeys or trackside race and rally if you want a sports tyre, otherwise any bob-jane, tyrepower etc will likely have a pirelli p3000 that should work fine or a dunlop.

One last thing is fitting tyres to wires and having them properly balanced is important, but not many shops can do it, see if you can find a specialist classic shop who can fit and balance the wheels it makes a huge difference, escpeically that the wires are true and all in tension.

Posted as information.

Alpines were originally fitted with either 5.60, 5.90 or 6.00x13 tires.

The radial equivalent of a 6.00x13 is a 155/80R13.

The recommended radial section width for a 4-1/2" wide wheel is 155 mm.

A 185/70R13 tire has a recommended wheel width of 5-1/2".

Your car, your choice.

tire choice

According to the Tire Rack, a 185 x 70 x13 has a rim width range of 4.5"-6".
Hope this helps.

An aside: The factory size is a bit small if you have uprated your performance in anyway. Just like the Tiger, with the slightest modification, the tires will be undersized.

Barry,

When i had wires i ran 155 dunlops, i'd guess they were slightly undersized really, they lift a little lip on the rim, i think 165 is probably closer to the total width of the original crossply tyres

Michael,

You may be correct, but the numbers indicate otherwise:

Cross section width of 6.00x13 tire = 6.00 inches

Cross section width of 155/80-R13 tire = 155 mm = 6.10 inches

Cross section width of 165/xx-R13 tire = 165 mm = 6.50 inches
