Always change the condenser??

Decided to get a new dizzy. The old one was scattering spark, advance curve was way to fast and the pressure retard (part of the dual vacuum advance) was too late. Bought one on line for only 30 bucks. Came complete with points, dual vacuum advance and condenser. installed it. The engine then went VERY flat at 4000, backfired at 4200 and simply missed on a hard pull at 2000. Also did not want to move off the line and low speed driveability was poor. These "carburettor" problems were new and totally unexpected. Swapped out the new condenser for the old one, everything was then fine.

Lesson of the day: When you take out an old condenser that is working properly, don't throw it away. More correctly, don't replace a good one. If you do, keep in mind the new one could very well be no good and if you are chasing a mysterious carburettor problem, try a different condenser.

Some on here don't give the Pertronix module a very high rating, and under more critical conditions I could understand their point, but it sure helped my SV for street use.

No condenser, no point gap, no dwell setting... Set the timing and go ("Set it, and forget it").
