hi i have a sunbeam alpine 1963 and it has the rear end changed with a rear end of an escort mk1. I need a picture of the rear end of a series 3 so i can purchase one like it, could anyone help please. Another thing is that my engine has a plate with "Replacement Engine", could anyone explaine what does that mean please. Thanks

Means that at some point in the car's early life the original engine broke, blew up or was otherwise considered unrepairable so a factory replacement was seen as a probably cheaper alternative.

Here is the external view of a 1963 Series 3 rear end I took out of a parts car a couple of weeks ago. I hope this helps.

Cheers,

On the rear of the rear axle there are tabs on each side that are about 4 inches long that have a place to hook the shock. The previous picture does not show this. Here are a couple of other pictures that will help you.

It probably came from and was installed by a dealer. But, since we don't know when it was replaced it could also have been a junkyard engine that just happened to already be a replacement.

yes some one must have put the engine but what i mean is that did the factory replace engines with new ones or did the factory supply a reconditioned engine which the factory attached the plate on the engine that says 'engine Replacment'

Is the your series 3 on of the late production cause i counted 5 leave springs and not 6. I have read lately that late series 3 had 5 leave spings and not 6. And with the same argument the front suspension is the same as the series 4-5 with the ball joints up and down and not with the trunion. Could it be that since it was one of the last series3 produced a series 4 system was attache dto the car?

series IVa parts

I found a Series IVa in a garage and the owner said that it is complete with and none of the things are missing, does any one think its a good candidate for parts for my series 3.

Mechanically most everything would swap over. Same would be true for the interior. Bodywise mostly no, since the 3 and the IVa have significant changes between them. Big question, if saving both is not an option, is since this subforum is for factory original, how important is being true to what the manufacturer did to you?

I belive that since i have a series 3 and being the one which was least produced i should leave it as original as possible. However what i meant was which parts are exactly the same. Till now It has cost me an arm and a leg to revive my sunbeam as original as possible and according to the specs indicated in the workshop manual and parts manual.

Dept. of unnecessary information says:
To the Escort axle it would be possibly to get a diff. brake. (something for the racing people!) and a lot of ratios (at least if you live in U.K.)
