3.89 crown and pinion gears interchangable?

My SV currently has 4.22 rear-end, ( I counted). Would like to change to 3.89 when I refresh the bearings on the way to installing a overdrive.
Are the early series 3.89 interchangeable with the later SV ? I understand the axle splines changes to "fine" about S3 but not sure if that is relevant.

Phil, Why an early Series? The SV's had 3:89's also...

They came mixed.

SV's from ...10313 onward came with 3.89's standard, 4.22's w/OD.
