2.8 piston rings

hey Guys: my 2.8 has started to burn oil. i did a wet and dry compression test, which pointed to bad rings.
i tore the engine apart, and had no scoring, bad pistons or other problems (i thought).
i took it to the machine shop and the machinist pulled one of my compression rings off and bent it.
it did not break or spring back, so he says the rings have been overheated and lost temper, probably due to advanced ignition timing. i have never heard of this before. any input would be welcomed.

my machine shop guys thinks a faulty (or worn out) distributor caused my ring failure, so in the trash it goes.
i'm looking at a new one from Summit Racing made by Davis Unified Industries. kinda pricey, but supposed to be the best for the 2.8.
anyone had experience with these?

It is like a GM HEI conversion. Get a remanufactured Duraspark distributor and use the GM 4 pin HEI module externally instead of the Duraspark control box. 4 times cheaper.
