You sure? thought after something like 25 years old you did not have to do anything other than buy the car and get it here.

Jim E is right. There is a 25 year old exemption rule. Older Minis are brought in all the time with this rule. California has different rules though.

Minis were legally imported in their day.

What vehicle from the STLs day is going to be in the DMV database?

When I registered my Alpine here in CO last month, the DMV folks couldnt find documentation as to what a sunbeam alpine was. They had info on the tiger, but not the alpine. They finally found a 70s vehicle binder that told them what it was, what its value was and that it was a legit car.

I cant picture how it would have gone with them had they not found the old book.

Wow! When I registered mine two years ago, the lady I delt with immediately pulled her old car book out. I was out of there in 10 minutes.

However when it came to my truck, they were out of license plates and I had to come back a few days later...

And it sure does not run like any Gremlin or Horizon I was ever in! That 200+HP Lotus engine moves it down the road pretty well. 3 of us overweight American Sunbeam owners got a ride in one in England a few years ago. It was scary fast. I want one. Anyone else here ever ridden/driven one?

Never driven or ridden in one but I'd love to bring that one in the country. I've been a Lotus fan and owner from long before I was interested in Sunbeam. This car would click on both counts. I don't think there is any problem registering in Calif but it needs to be over 30 years old. When I brought my Tiger in from Oklahoma they had no clue what it was but once the saw the prior registration and inspected the car for a proper appearing vin tag they said great give us the money.

Hi,

I would love to own one of these retro rockets. It's up there on my list with an Escort RS1800 and Fiat 131 Abarth (I love that era of rallying). Very rare in this form and I too wish I had the money to purchase one.

Regards, Robin.
