Automotive adhesives

So, many car manufacturers now use specific automotive glues to bond structural components.

Often different glues depending on the area of the car and structural loads.

Im wondering if anyone has considered using these as a " value add" when restoring their cars.

The factory for example would use limited welding along areas like the cruciform to the floors... You could potentially increase the sriffness of the shell by sealing the floors to the X with these glues as well as the welding.

Same in areas like the boot floor or other places where panels are spot welded and then seam sealer is applied.

If instead of seam sealer you used an automotive adhesive wouldn't it provide the seal as well as adding structural strength? And without the added weight of seam welding a shell..

Im thinking of this for a good way of stiffening a shell for racing without the weight penalty or chance of distortion of seam welding.

Any thoughts?

Some adhesives are actually stronger than typical automotive spot welding methods, but the truly structural adhesives have to be used in very specific ways.

I like the concept of using a high quality structural adhesive instead of spot welds or rosette welds to attach Series Alpine floor pans or trunk bottoms, but I doubt that it would result in a stronger or stiffer unibody.

Barry if the adhesives are the same strength as the weld it should result in a stiffer unibody as by applying to all the seams you increase torsional stiffness.. Same reason you seam weld a body for racing.

I was thinking if the correct adhesive can be used to run along the floors to X frame and maybe the arches to centre section and the top hats to arches it could result in a decent increase

Food for thought.....If you were to stiffen one area, where will those forces be transferred to?
Possible cause stress cracks elsewhere
