The late tachs have an electronic signal.. So something has changed suddenly to interfere of you haven't had intermittent issues.
I can think of a few things....but i would guess Tom H will probably chime in soon... And his thoughts on diagnosis will be far more detailed than mine.

Most likely one of the components has failed, although I have never heard of a failure like this where the RPM suddenly reads double. You say "it reads very high at any RPM". Do you mean it reads about double what it should at any RPM, or it reads about 6000 at any RPM?
