Hello all. I’m Matt. Short story a question time. Back in the early 90s while either going to or coming from my grandparents house in PA I saw an Alpine in a garage. I called to my parents “There’s a racing Alpine in that garage”. In my mind at the time no front bumper and auxiliary lights meant race car. Dad turned around and we talked to the people. We ended up buying the car soon after and my parents drove the car home. It was painted a bright yellow. I think at least two of the wire wheels were painted white. It became determined that I was the one who was going to do something with it. I decided on a near complete tear down. I wanted to do some body work and change the color. Going by the engine compartment it had previously been (from the looks of it) Wedgewood blue. Well life happened. Some of the parts made it to other cars. We had had nearly two dozen Alpines and a pair of Tigers through they family at that point. Been to a few Tigers East/Alpines East get together a when I was very young. So sometimes people need things. Now I have decided to make some progress. Problem is, there is some conflicting things about this car. Though it’s blue in the engine compartment the color code of 19 say that it should be Moonstone. The data plate says LRX but it’s right hand drive. Plus there is SB between that and the color code and haven’t been able to find what that means. Any help would be cool. If it helps it’s a later Series 2 car #9073.

Matthew, A few PIC's are always helpful too!

How about a nice clear image of the data plates? Might want to provide your info to the Registrar Paul A keeps the registry up to date for the SAOCA.

When I tore the car down I removed the data plate and put it in my parents safe. That is why I’m holding it for this pic.

Its still an Alpine. Rebuild it any way you want. Happens all the time, even if all the numbers and colors are in agreement. The main concern is that it does not end up in boxes (with a few parts missing) and advertised for sale, with "All the hard work done. Just needs some assembly and TLC."

Look under the dash that area often escapes a respray. If heater core, and hood latch is still there that can be a hiding place under there from a paint gun.

As Warren says, the place that almost never gets re-painted is the area under the bonnet (front hood) latch area. Remove the screws around the latch and lift it up... there will almost certainly be your original color.

Matt, whats the trunk area and fuel filler area like? Are there any cut outs or hatch covers around the trans tunnel? Anything odd like duplicate elements in the electrical system?

You mean like this Michael?!
Would be nice if Matt owned the missing Sebring car. Still kick myself for passing up a chance to buy one for $900. I just didn't know the info behind them....
Matt does the chassis number stamped on the firewall match the number on the data plate?

When I get home from work I’ll go literally dig stuff off of the car. I’ll do my best to get some pics. While I vaguely remember the previous owner say something about the car having been raced in the past I was only like 12 at the time. It has steel doors and bonnet so I don’t think it was a factory race car. Unless they were changed out at some point.

I also have a small problem now. I found what I thought to be the title. It’s number matches the engine I have but not the data plate. B9116960RR0. I’m all confused now. I’ll finish with the pics though.

One of the things this car had that I liked was the flip style fuel cap and not the screw style.

This looks to be a later SII car. The hood prop is the most obvious clue. It is interesting that is a RHD car but I don't see any other clues that this would be a factory car. However, it is unusual to see RHD in the U.S..

I’ve cleaned the area the best I can. No number so I’ll agree that the data plate is probably this car and the title and engine came from a parts car.

Maybe my confusion comes from the title being for a RHD car. I can’t remember having any others in the family. Oh well. Maybe as I dig through more old paperwork I’ll find more info.
