67 v6 Restomod build

Hello all,

Thought I would finally post up my purchase and begin detailing the build for posterity.

I decided to give a new home to Michael Farris's 67 Hardtop that was listed right here on SAOCA. She arrived in Loveland Colorado on October 8th from North Carolina via transport company. I drover her about 50 yards into the garage and almost immediately began the restoration and modification.

After tons of correspondence i knew that I was getting into a good deal of work...and I was not wrong. The most alarming thing yet was that at some point in her life a past owner (not Mike) decided to undercoat the car...not just the "underside" but damn near the whole thing. I have removed over 60lbs of undercoating material alone (actually weighed it I was so shocked) from the trunk, hood, inner doors, inner fenders, soft top boot, engine bay and wheel wells. the most disturbing of which was the 5 inches deep "sandboxes" (soaked with gasoline) that resided under the gas tanks and through the crossover...which, I might add, was home to some crazy little black ants. Either that or I was hallucinating from the fumes. After puling all the coating out i realized that they decided to just coat right over some exceptional rust damage and a fair amount of bondo. Pics link attached below.

I have begun the rust exorcism and will be updating as things warrant. Anyone in the area that wants to stop by or would be willing to let me document their series 5 (especially Hard topped versions)for reference as I go will earn themselves a place in my heart and perhaps a BBQ at my house.

I have an SII (with a hardtop whose details would be irrelevant to your endeavor). But alas I live in Golden and dont make it that way too often.

I am pretty handy though on the drivetrain elements of SV vehicles as I have a 1725 engine and an alysynch transmission.

If you ever find yourself down this way, stop by and I'll treat you to a beer.

Couple more pics to share. I've been working on fitment of the doors and window frame as there were damage issues that needed to be addressed. Trying to recreate body lines and correct angles is a bit maddening at times. In her past, someone must have stripped the paint by hucking large bricks at the body until clean.

I also have gutted the trunk and last 4ish feet of exhaust in preparation for the fuel cell and battery mount. As an aside I will have the full gas tank system up in the For Sale area in the next few days.

Dave, How's the door hinges? Even a tiny little wear will play havoc with adjustment.

Here's wishing you well with your project.

Restomod Update 2

Cold weather has been holding up my progress a bit but just thought I'd toss out a few pics of the work that I have been getting done. Old trunk floor is gone, bracing for racing fuel cell is in, new sheet metal floor is in, New rear exhaust is hung, plus....total removal of "soft top well" is finished and fully wrapped rear firewall is in, working on smooth integration into stock body lines for both of those.

Thanks for watching...

Nice work. Lots of progress in a short amount of time. I feel your rusty pain. I had to replace my SV trunk, floors, luggage shelves. Everything horizontal.

Keep the pics coming.

Good Question

Interesting and good looking, but will it come out?

Bill

Bill - It will come out, although it obviously wont be a quick process. the side panels from the frame brace forward (Not shown) will be an easier removal if basic access is needed. The back half that will include the console storage will be a permanent install.

Getting close to finished (Structure wise anyway) on the Dash/Console...A lock and lid finishes the console cubby, a bit of finesse with a hammer will smooth out some small waves near the cut edges and some of the bends, then I'm just waiting for the gauges, switches, panels, faceplate and such for final dimensions before cutting the holes in the dash.

Getting there...

What seat is that in the console pic, and is it low enough that the soft top clears it ?

Like the dash/console.

Seat Question

Like the dash/console.

That is a bucket seat out of an early model Miata. It does clear the Hardtop very well but....as I do not have a Soft top, and my seat mounts are not stock, I really could only guess. If I'm not mistaken, quite a few other Sunbeams have run these seats...I'm guessing someone on the forum probably knows.

PS there are some really nice Recovers offered for them as well
