China to phase out coal

They have been talking about that since mid 2014 and discussed only using "clean coal" around Beijing in their plants... But its still coal and it still generates huge pollution.

The upside with China is that if the government decided they want to do something they will make it happen... They are pushing clean and renewable energy technology and they sure need to.

Last I heard, China passed the USA as the world's #1 emitter of so-called "greenhouse gases" three years ago, and currently emits 27% of the world's atmospheric pollution. At the present rate of increase, China will ADD as much pollution each year as the total emitted by Japan, and every three years the annual total from the USA.

They may talk about reducing pollution, but talk is cheap; the fact remains that China and India, together, open a new coal-fired power station every 9 days, and are building, or plan to build, over 900 more before 2035. China, India, and emerging future economic giants and polluters like Brazil and Indonesia, were excempted from the Kyoto Treaty, which is one reason why George W. Bush refused to sign it; it was obviously aimed solely at western countries, especially the USA.

This looks to evolve into a political debate, so maybe it should be moved into the appropriate section.

China has more to lose by climate change and their populace is becoming unhappy about the trade-off of environment and prosperity.

China has a lot of issues facing it, not to change the subject. Besides air pollution there is dumping of waste both in their water and on land. And I read an article once that said their own government numbers show a rapidly ageing population expected to have as many as 400m over the age of 65 by 2030. And the relaxing of the single child rules seems to be failing as the generation of young parents were mostly raised as only children and want to raise their own that way rather than split attention among two.
